We sweep the river with new friends Renee, Jan and Soleil!

We made some new friends on a Covid Saturday in October 2020 when some amazing volunteers came out for Riverkeeper’s Annual Riversweep. Renee, Jan and Soleil joined our Managing Director Kara to “sweep” the streets along the Brooklyn Bridge Esplanade (where we hope to install + POOL following last year’s big news) to make sure the gunk in the streets doesn’t become gunk in the water. The Annual Riversweep is a State-wide initiative led by our friends at Riverkeeper who are working towards a trash-free Hudson River Estuary.

The annual day of service, Riverkeeper Sweep, has become a catalyst for sustained, year-round action. Trash enters the River from a variety of sources. Among these are litter picked up in wet weather and carried through storm drains, illegal dumping, and littering. Ultimately litter flows into the Atlantic Ocean contributing to a global problem known as marine debris. Marine debris harms wildlife threatens public health and impacts the economic vitality of Hudson River communities.

The + POOL contingent of this State-wide initiative swept the Brooklyn Bridge Esplanade from Pier 35 to Pier 17.  Our wildest find: a space heater. PSA: Don’t throw your space heaters in the streets, folks.

Big thanks to American Rivers and Riverkeeper for providing materials so we could safely perform our civic service duty in the age of Covid and an extra big thanks to The Howard Hughes Corporation in the Seaport District for taking our garbage at the end of the day.
