Our pool shell arrives in NYC!
It’s official: the shell of our pilot pool has arrived in NYC from Bollinger Shipyard in Mississippi! This vessel will house the filtration system, pool, and on deck amenities for our pilot pool — a 2,000 sq. ft. rectangular version of the iconic plus-shaped design!
It was important for us to get rolling on the vessel that will hold our pool; even as we finalize the design, permitting, and construction of our first pool. Steel is not cheap; and it’s not getting any cheaper these days. It also takes a long time to order and weld; and there are only so many places and people who can do that kind of work. The shell will soon be retrofitted into our first pool, bringing to fruition over a decade of dreaming, designing, and community support. The pool will go through final testing in Spring 2026.
The shell is currently sitting on a dry tow in Erie Basin waiting for its craning date. The shell will soon be lifted from the dry tow and placed into the water in the Port of Newark and brought to the marine yard where the pool itself will be constructed. That’s where the magic will happen. Once construction drawings are approved by health agencies, we’ll start building the filters, pipes and pool itself so that the facility can go through a (hopefully final!) test run for city agencies. This pilot pool marks a massive step forward in bringing + POOL to life; and bringing safe public access to our city’s waters to all New Yorkers.
Every beam, bolt, and buoy brings us a step closer to the permitting stage required for public swimming. Stay tuned as we continue to build history—right here in the river.
