What an exciting day it was at Pier 35! Community members and supporters of + POOL gathered to celebrate a huge milestone—the arrival of the + POOL filtration pilot. This innovative project, dedicated to bringing clean, safe swimming to the heart of New York City, has officially found its home on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, thanks to the unwavering support of the Two Bridges community and Friends of + POOL.
This demonstration will be a key step towards the dream of a + POOL—a floating pool that filters river water to create a safe swimming environment for New Yorkers. Friends of + POOL, in partnership with global consultancy Arup, have developed a state-of-the-art filtration system that treats river water to meet strict microbiological standards, all without the use of chemicals. This summer, Water Quality Engineers and System Operators will be busy at Pier 35, testing the system daily to ensure it’s ready for a larger pilot in 2025.
The excitement at the event wasn’t just about the pilot—it was about what it represents: a safer, healthier, and more inclusive way to enjoy New York City’s iconic waterways. The floating barge and + POOL signage at Pier 35 will serve as a beacon of what’s possible when communities come together with a shared vision.
Cheers to the incredible community members who made this day possible. We’re so grateful for your support!
