+ POOL

Some amazing 7th graders at Hunter’s Point Community Middle School are using + POOL as a launching point to learn about water quality.  On November 11th, we visited the students and presented the project in full to the entire 7th grade class.  After studying + POOL, they had some pretty insanely good questions about + POOL including:

– How is the water being filtered and what is the maintenance process?
– If the waste removed from + POOL is being returned to our sewer system, is it counterproductive given CSO overflows carry sewage right into our rivers?
– How are you involving the community in your efforts?
– What are the next steps that your company is taking?
– When can we swim in + POOL?

The students at Hunter’s Point Community Middle School have been regularly testing pH, dissolved oxygen, turbidity and salinity of the East River. Many students recognized that the water is healthy for organisms to live in, but also recognized that there pollution factors that make the water questionable. Some students are convinced that they would be comfortable swimming in the water now, especially since they learned that there are some races that occur in the waterways!

We’re super excited to share our work with eager students who are learning about water quality and look forward to collaborating with more and more schools.
