+ POOL

A Green Infrastructure Design competition for Sixth Graders

Get this: 6th graders at Avenues the World’s School now get to spent a semester studying Green Infrastructure Design through the lens of + POOL! Students are split into groups and tasked with researching green design, water quality and historical precedents for public projects like + POOL.

Teachers Emma and Fiona kick off the course by having each group plan their Design Green Blueprint, guided by a process of Empathy, Define, Ideate, Prototype, Test. To help the kids understand + POOL’s design, they break down a Brita filter (metaphorically!) into Parts, Purpose and Complexities.

The course culminates with the groups building their own prototypes for a public recreational space that incorporates green design, a pool and any other creative ideas they have!
