About the Talk:
Ever stop to ponder that New York City is surrounded by water? Once upon a time, our waterfront culture and desire for swimming recreation led to the development of 11 massive public swimming pools in one summer during the height of the Great Depression. Join us for a talk that takes you back in time when indoor plumbing was rare, chlorine had not yet been invented, and swimming for recreation was a dream for many until the 1936 “Summer of Pools” changed the course of NYC swimming pool history. And, how the history of swimming pools may be changing once again! Let’s engage in the past, present, and future of NYC Public Pools with + POOL Program Director Nora Cronin.
