Four Actions for World Water Day

MARCH 22, 2022

Four Actions for World Water Day

Today we’re celebrating World Water Day, a day where we focus on the importance of water.   In a world where 2 billion people worldwide lack safely managed drinking water, 4 billion people lack safely managed sanitation, and 3 billion people lack basic hand washing facilities at home, we are incredibly privileged to live in a city where we have access to clean water (thanks, DEP!But we can do better.  We are still not at a point where we can access the water for swimming.

Take these Four Actions today:

1. Read & Share the NYC Comprehensive Waterfront Plan

We promote opportunities to get onto & into the water and we are getting so much better at providing access to our waterfront, thanks to so many advocates like you.  Here’s the proof: last December, the New York City Department of City Planning released its new Comprehensive Waterfront Plan that sets policy goals related to our waterfront for the next 10 years. The plan highlights developing “innovative approaches to pilot safe swimming solutions that complement traditional beaches, including floating pools.” Read the Plan to familiarize yourself with plans for the next 10 years & Tell @NYCPlanning your favorite part of the plan

2. Support Water Safety Education

Water Safety Education is super important in a City of Water like NYC.  That’s why we’re advocates for Bill A728, mandating water safety education in New York State schools. Tell the NYS Legislature you vote “Aye” on Bill A728 to require water safety education in schools.  Click here to voice your support for A728. Or donate here to + POOL’s free swim lessons for youth.

3. Support the Environmental Bond Act

We’re working with a coalition of advocates for clean air and clean water to put the $4 billion Environmental Bond Act on the 2022 ballot because we believe we can build a more vibrant future for New York. Get up to speed on the Environmental Bond Act you may be voting on in the next election! Click here to learn about the Environmental Bond Act and get ready to vote!

4. Advocate for Increased Environmental Education.

Tell the Governor and Legislature you want more support for the Hudson River Estuary Program. The Estuary Program has created beloved projects like the Day in the Life of the Hudson that are critical to environmental education.  Increased funds would help ramp up existing programs and launch new initiatives.   Click here to take action.
