Who are you Rachael?
I created Human NYC, LLC, and opened a gallery space in Greenpoint two years ago (previously Beginnings —) curating shows, printing zines and mainly on highlighting women in the arts. Last year Michael Ray and I partnered up to build websites for clients, operating as a digital collective within RoAndCo Studios. We like to say that we are “the web development shop for thoughtful design.” I’m stoked on building internet homes, my online editorial The Working Pair, baking rhubarb pies when in season, playing Battleship with my brother, and doing good work with good people!!
What’s on your tile and what’s the story?
“Ya’ll Call Pickles Gherkins?” Hugh Francis <3 and I were in Poland this summer visiting his family, in my very American accent (think Brad Pitt in Inglourious Basterds) I posed this question to his cousins loudly over lunch. Hugh has made fun of me for it at least twice a week since. We also both love pickles.
Your tile will be permanently engraved on a public space in New York? What do you think about that?
I think it’s rad! I hope someone will laugh when they see it or google gherkin. I’m happy to have a permanent spot at the pool!
What interests you most about the project?
The community-driven approach is my favorite part. The project has fun-loving roots, friends with an idea, and I admire the way it has grown in this open source, super collaborative way. People are happy when they talk about the pool and that makes me proud. Creativity, Inc. is one of the best books, I feel like this design project has Pixar vibes. I’m also from upstate NY and am so looking forward to natural river water in NYC.
You like burritos?
I’ve never met a burrito I didn’t like. I love breakfast burritos. Guacamole.
