Partnership with Henry Street Settlement and Amazon helps us create new lifeguards and more opportunities!
Over six weeks from April to June 2024, we partnered with Henry Street Settlement to help certify 61 new lifeguards and teach almost 50 others the skills needed to be successful in a lifeguard course in the future. Our program was a one-of-a-kind free opportunity in the city, to help get pools staffed with much-needed guards and connect our participants with a fun and well-paid job. Fighting against that lifeguard shortage!
There were 635 submissions for the Lifeguard Training Application. 14% of the applicants were 15 years old, 31% were between 16-17 years old, and 54% were over 18 years old. We offered space to 187 students across all classes, and we had 121 students attend at least one program session, creating a 65% attendance rate for the program. All students who completed the intake form were invited to skills training at Leman Preparatory. Additionally, + POOL staff followed up with every student who did not pass the pretest at John Jay with information about the Swim Skills program. In total, 48 students attended a skills session, with 65% attending two or more sessions.
64 students attended the certification course, with 61 passing the course, for a percentage pass rate of 95%. Of the certifications, 5 certifications were for Junior Lifeguarding based on the candidates age of 15, and 3 were re-certifications of previously certified guards.
This program also included a Career Fair for jobs in Aquatics at Henry Street Settlement with over 60 employers present to offer all of our newly-certified guards jobs. Can’t wait to see everyone out there in the lifeguard stands this summer!
