+ POOL Light illuminates the physical conditions of the East River to engage the public more deeply in water quality issues. Installed in the New York Seaport District at Pier 17, the installation comprises of a 50x50ft plus-shaped floating sculpture of LEDs that change in color based on the quality of water in the East River in real-time. Designers PLAYLAB INC & Family New York worked with scientists at Columbia University’s Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory (LDEO) to create an algorithm that will inform the changing of the lights by predicting swimmable water computed based on environmental conditions and data pulled from sondes placed in the river on site.
